French High Schools Shut Amid Violence
Hundreds of French high schools closed after students set fires and clashed with police, forcing the closure of about 400 schools out of 3,700 nationwide.
The protests began in the Paris region last week and spread rapidly, with students blocking access to buildings and demanding shorter school hours, better classroom conditions, and fewer staff absences.
Police used tear gas and fired canisters, injuring at least 65 staff members, 40 principals, and 170 students. The government condemned the violence and called for dialogue.
Education Minister Edouard Geffray said the movement was influenced by fringe groups, while Justice Minister Gerald Darmanin urged parents to be held liable for damages. The protests continue ahead of the presidential election.
