Ireland Press Conference Cut Short Amid Tensions

Ireland’s pre‑match press conference before the Nations League game against Israel was abruptly ended amid political tensions and accusations.

The Republic of Ireland’s press conference in Backa Topola, Serbia, was cut short when head coach Heimir Hallgrimsson fielded questions from Israeli journalists.

During the first match in Hungary, the Irish squad wore armbands and lowered their heads while the Israeli national anthem played, and no handshakes occurred between captains.

After the Football Association of Ireland refused to host the return leg at home for security reasons, the pre‑match press conference sparked new tensions.

One journalist asked Hallgrimsson about a flight from the UAE to Israel that Emirati judicial authorities and Israeli officials described as a “terrorist act.” The Irish press officer replied that the focus was on football questions.

Another journalist accused the Irish players of calling Israeli players “monkeys,” a claim the Football Association of Ireland denied and the reporter was removed from the microphone.

Israeli authorities condemned the actions taken by the Irish team, with Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar accusing Dublin of being on “the wrong side of history.”

Hallgrimsson said the team had faced many challenges and emotions, and that they focus on football and maintain calm before matches.
