Karachi Port Hits Record Shipping Connectivity

On Tuesday, the Karachi Port Authority (KPA) announced that the port has achieved its highest-ever shipping connectivity, handling a record 1.2 million TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units) in the first quarter of 2026. This milestone marks a significant uptick from the 950,000 TEUs recorded in the same period last year, reflecting a 26% increase in cargo throughput. The surge is attributed to a combination of expanded berth capacity, upgraded container handling equipment, and streamlined customs procedures that have reduced turnaround times for vessels.

Economic analysts note that the port’s performance is a key driver for Pakistan’s trade balance. Karachi, which accounts for roughly 70% of the country’s maritime trade, now sees a 15% rise in foreign direct investment in logistics and supply-chain infrastructure. The KPA’s new terminal, inaugurated in 2024, features state‑of‑the‑art gantry cranes and automated stowage systems that can handle vessels up to 200 meters in length. These upgrades have attracted several major shipping lines, including Maersk, MSC, and CMA CGM, to schedule more frequent calls to the port.

Government officials highlighted the port’s role in supporting national economic goals. Prime Minister Anwaar‑ul‑Haq Kakar stated that the record connectivity aligns with the “Pakistan Vision 2030” plan, which aims to position the country as a regional logistics hub. The Ministry of Commerce has announced a new incentive package for exporters, offering reduced port fees for shipments that exceed 10,000 TEUs annually. Additionally, the KPA is collaborating with the Karachi Development Authority to improve hinterland connectivity, including the construction of dedicated freight corridors linking the port to major industrial zones in Sindh and Punjab.

While the record figures are encouraging, experts caution that sustaining growth will require continued investment in port infrastructure and workforce training. The KPA’s annual report indicates that 12% of its workforce will receive advanced training in digital cargo management by the end of 2026. Moreover, the port is exploring green initiatives, such as shore power systems and electric handling equipment, to reduce its carbon footprint and comply with international maritime environmental standards.
