Student Runs 1,100km From Lahore to Skardu
Faizan Ahmed, a student at Government College University in Lahore, has completed a 1,100‑kilometre endurance run that took him from the city of Lahore to the high‑altitude town of Skardu in the Gilgit‑Baltistan region. The run, which covered a distance roughly equivalent to the length of a trans‑continental flight, was completed over a period of 30 days, with the athlete averaging 36 kilometres per day.
The route began in Lahore, traversed the Punjab plains, crossed the Indus River, and entered the Karakoram Highway before climbing into the mountainous terrain of Skardu. Along the way, Ahmed faced extreme temperature swings, from scorching heat in the plains to freezing conditions in the highlands, as well as altitude sickness, uneven road surfaces, and occasional security checkpoints. He carried a lightweight pack, relied on local support at rest stops, and logged his progress on a public social‑media channel that attracted thousands of followers.
Training for the run began six months earlier, with a regimen that included long‑distance treadmill sessions, hill repeats, and nutrition planning. Ahmed worked with a local coach and a physiotherapist to prevent injuries. The run was also a fundraising effort for a community health initiative in Skardu, and the athlete received sponsorship from a regional sports apparel brand. His completion of the run has drawn attention to the potential for endurance sports in Pakistan and has inspired other young athletes to pursue similar challenges.
Officials from the Pakistan Sports Board praised Ahmed’s achievement as a milestone for Pakistani endurance running. He plans to use the experience to advocate for better training facilities and to mentor aspiring runners. The run has also highlighted the logistical challenges of long‑distance travel in remote regions, prompting discussions about infrastructure improvements. Ahmed’s story is being covered by national media outlets and is expected to influence the development of future sports programs across the country.
