UN Chief Guterres to Visit Pakistan Oct 6‑8
UN Secretary General António Guterres will visit Pakistan from Oct 6 to 8, according to the Foreign Office. During the three‑day trip he will meet President Asif Ali Zardari, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, and senior military leaders including Field Marshal Asim Munir. He will also tour the UN Military Observer Group in India and Pakistan headquarters and attend a briefing at the National Disaster Management Authority.
Guterres has led the United Nations since 2016 and his tenure will end on Dec 31, 2026. The UN Military Observer Group in India and Pakistan (UNMOGIP) monitors the cease‑fire line between the two countries, while the National Disaster Management Authority coordinates disaster preparedness and early warning in Pakistan. Pakistan has long been a key partner of the UN, contributing to peacekeeping missions and supporting multilateral initiatives on climate change, counter‑terrorism and humanitarian aid.
The visit underscores Pakistan’s commitment to multilateralism and its role in regional security. By highlighting disaster preparedness and early warning systems, the trip signals Pakistan’s readiness to collaborate on global challenges. Strengthening ties with the UN also boosts Pakistan’s diplomatic influence and signals to investors that the country is engaged in international governance and security cooperation.
