Muqam Criticizes PTI, Warns of KP Security Risks

Amir Muqam, Minister for Kashmir Affairs and Gilgit‑Baltistan, condemned the PTI‑led government in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on Monday, stating that the federal government is not in favour of imposing governor’s rule or declaring an emergency in the province. He warned that the ongoing long march led by Chief Minister Sohail Afridi toward Islamabad, aimed at securing the release of jailed former prime minister Imran Khan, poses national security risks. Muqam accused the provincial administration of losing its writ and of allowing the security situation to deteriorate, urging the federal, provincial and armed forces to coordinate counter‑terrorism efforts and to keep the province stable.

Pakistan Tehreek‑e‑Insaf (PTI) has a history of staging long marches to protest perceived injustices, with the most recent one in 2026 targeting Islamabad after the party’s leader was imprisoned. Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, a volatile frontier province, has seen frequent clashes between state forces and militant groups, making the prospect of governor’s rule a contentious issue. The federal government’s reluctance to endorse emergency measures reflects concerns about constitutional overreach and the potential for escalating unrest.

Muqam’s remarks highlight the fragile balance between provincial autonomy and national security. If the long march continues unchecked, it could undermine public confidence in democratic institutions and embolden extremist elements. A coordinated response that respects provincial governance while addressing security threats will be crucial for maintaining stability across Pakistan’s diverse political landscape.
