US, Iran Explore Phased Exit from War

Washington and Tehran are negotiating a phased exit from the war, with Tehran reopening the Strait of Hormuz and the US lifting its economic blockade.

The Strait of Hormuz carries about a fifth of the world’s oil. Tehran wants relief from the blockade that is strangling its economy, while Washington wants free passage for ships.

Both sides say they do not want to move first, complicating talks. A staged arrangement has been suggested, with Iran allowing ships through Hormuz in return for an end to the blockade and possible access to frozen assets.

The White House has shown little urgency, while Gulf states have pressed the US for a post midterm strategy. Eighty countries have called for full restoration of Gulf shipping.

The UAE has suspended Iranian airline flights, aligning with US sanctions, and has blocked financial transactions with Iran’s Bank Melli.

Iran remains prepared for renewed conflict, stating it will not give up administrative control of the strait, even if it drops toll demands.
