Aleema Khan Detained Under MPO Order

Aleema Khan, sister of former prime minister Imran Khan, was detained by authorities in Lahore under a 30‑day order issued by Deputy Commissioner Muhammad Ali Ijaz on September 20.

The order, based on the Punjab Maintenance of Public Order Ordinance, 1960, allows authorities to detain individuals without judicial review and directs the detention to be held at Central Jail Kot Lakhpat.

The DC cited police reports that alleged Aleema Khan and Muhammad Ameer were involved in roadblocks and protests on May 9, 2023, and that they had mobilised workers to damage public property and incite public disorder.

The PTI has condemned the arrest, describing it as a “cowardly and deliberate attempt to worsen the situation” and has called for Aleema Khan’s immediate release. PTI chairman Gohar Ali Khan posted on X that the arrest would fuel violence and demanded her release.

Opposition alliance Tehreek-i-Tahaffuz Ayeen-i-Pakistan also condemned the move, calling it an act of state oppression and demanding her release. The arrest comes amid a crackdown on PTI ahead of its September 27 protest demanding Imran Khan’s release.

No comment has been received from the police. The situation remains under scrutiny as PTI prepares to mobilise supporters for the upcoming protest.
