M-1 Motorway Reopens After Closure
The M-1 motorway between Islamabad and Peshawar has reopened to all traffic in both directions after an indefinite closure linked to PTI’s long march.
Earlier this week, the National Highways & Motorway Police closed the M-1 between the Islamabad Toll Plaza and Chhachh Interchange, the M-14 between Hakla and Kundal, and the GT Road at Attock Khurd. Restoration work on the M-14 and the loop connecting the M-1 with the Hazara Motorway continues.
Travelers from Islamabad to Abbottabad can exit the M-1 at Burhan Interchange, use the GT Road via Hasan Abdal, and rejoin the Hazara Expressway at Jhuri Kas Interchange, according to a motorway police spokesperson.
Security measures were intensified in Attock, with containers and sandbags placed at key bridges and tightened control at major entry and exit points ahead of the PTI protest. The Punjab government imposed a 13‑day ban on gatherings and a Section 144 restriction in Islamabad for two months.
On September 25, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Afridi announced that PTI’s long march would now begin from Peshawar on October 4, aiming to press for the release of founder Imran Khan, who is incarcerated in Rawalpindi’s Adiala jail.
