US Marine Arrested in Okinawa Over Murder

A US Marine was arrested in Okinawa on suspicion of murdering a Japanese woman in a Naha hotel.

The suspect, Lance Corporal Devin Jacob Ballard, 20, is accused of killing Anna Yagi, 39, and taking her wallet and backpack, police said. Ballard denied the allegations.

Police said CCTV footage showed a foreign man entering a room with a woman and later leaving with her belongings. The man matched the description and was taken to a local police station where he was arrested.

Japan’s foreign ministry and Okinawa’s governor received statements of condolences from the US ambassador, who pledged full cooperation with the investigation. Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi called the crime “exceptionally brutal and vicious” and urged the US to enforce stricter discipline among its personnel.

The Marine Corps said the suspect is in Japanese custody and that it takes the allegations seriously, emphasizing the highest standards of behaviour for its members.
